Llanelly

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 6: Humber to Malta, p. 673

Llanelly, a manufacturing town and seaport of Carmarthenshire, South Wales, 11 miles WNW. of Swansea. The mineral wealth of the vicinity, and the easy access to the sea, have raised it from a mere village in 1813 to a town of considerable commercial importance. The Cambrian copper-works employ a great number of the inhabitants; there are also silver, lead, iron, and tin works, potteries, chemical works, &c. Large docks have been constructed, and coal is largely exported. With Carmarthen it returns one member to parliament. Pop. (1851) 8710; (1881) 19,655; (1891) 24,307.
