Llanos

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 6: Humber to Malta, p. 673

Llanos (Span., 'plains,' from Lat. planus, 'level,' pron. lyā'nos) are vast plains in the northern portion of South America, in some parts barren and sandy, in others covered with luxuriant grass and stocked with innumerable herds of cattle. Over great portions, however, there is a heavy growth of timber. The llaneros resemble the Ganchos (q.v.) farther south.
