Loureço Marques, or LORENZO MARQUES, a Portuguese station on Delagoa Bay, east coast of Africa. Pop. (1896) 3692, of whom 1544 were Portuguese, English, Italians, &c. It is the terminus of the railway to Pretoria, which was open to the Transvaal frontier (52 miles) in 1887, and all completed in 1895. In the Boer war of 1899-1900 it was the scene of much intrigue, and hence Kruger sailed to Europe. See DELAGOA BAY.
