Ludwigshafen, a town of the Bavarian Palatinate, stands on the left bank of the Rhine, opposite Mannheim. It was granted town rights only in 1859, and has grown rapidly owing to its manufactures (soda, aniline dyes, wagons, &c.) and its trade in iron, timber, coal, and agricultural products. Pop. (1864) 3911; (1875) 12,093; (1885) 21,042; (1890) 33,216.
