Luthardt, CHRISTOPH ERNST, Lutheran theologian, born at Maroldsweisach in Lower Franconia, 22d March 1823, studied at Erlangen, and became professor of Theology at Marburg in 1854, and in 1856 at Leipzig. His Commentary on John's Gospel (1852; 2d ed. 1875) has been translated into English, as has also St John the Author of the Fourth Gospel, and works on the saving, the fundamental, and the moral truths of Christianity (Apologetische Vorträge). He is also author of a Compendium der Dogmatik (1865; 9th ed. 1893), Die Ethik Luthers (1867), and Die Antike Ethik (1887), besides collections of lectures and sermons.
