Lutterworth

Lutterworth, a small town of Leicestershire, on the Swift, 8 miles NNE. of Rugby. The fine old church, restored by Scott in 1867-69, contains the pulpit and other relics of Wyclif, who was rector from 1374 till his death on 28th December 1384. He was buried here, but in 1428 his remains were dug up and burned, and the ashes cast into the Swift. 'This brook conveyed his ashes into Avon, Avon into Severn, Severn into the narrow seas, they into the main ocean; and thus the ashes of Wickliffe are the emblem of his doctrine, which now is dispersed all the world over.'
