Lynchburg, a city of Virginia, lies in a picturesque mountain-region, on the James River, which is here spanned by several bridges, 124 miles by rail W. by S. of Richmond. It is a thriving place, with the electric light and electric trams, and has several foundries, a cotton-mill, a fruit-canning factory, and manufactories of nails, farming implements, fertilisers, and furniture, besides tobacco, which is the staple of the town's trade. There are twenty-four leaf-tobacco factories, and an even larger number of others. Pop. (1880) 15,959; (1890) 19,709.
