Maartens, MAARTEN, is the pen-name of J. M. M. van der Poorten Schwarz, a Hollander, born in 1858, who, having spent part of his boyhood in England and been at school in Germany, was educated at a home university for law. He is known as the author of a series of powerful novels in nervous English, including The Sin of Joost Avelingh (1889), A Question of Taste, God's Fool, The Greater Glory, and My Lady Nobody (1895).
