Mafra, a town of Portugal, 20 miles NW. of Lisbon. Pop. 3020. The palace, built by John V. in 1717-31 as a rival to the Escorial, is 770 feet long and 690 feet wide; contains 866 rooms, and a library of 30,000 vols.; but now serves as a barrack and military academy.
