Manchineel

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 7: Maltebrun to Pearson, p. 14

Manchineel (Hippomane mancinella), a tropical American tree of the natural order Euphorbiaceæ, celebrated for the poisonous properties of its acrid milky juice. A drop of this burns like fire if it falls upon the skin, and the sore which it produces is very difficult to heal. The Indians use it for poisoning their arrows. The fruit is not unlike a small apple; dried and pulverised it is diuretic; and still more so its seeds. The wood is well suited for cabinet-making.
