Marengo, a village of Northern Italy, in a marshy district near the Bornida, 3 miles SE. of Alessandria. Here on 14th June 1800 Napoleon, with 33,000 French, defeated 30,500 Austrians under Melas. It was the cavalry charge of the younger Kellermann that turned what looked like certain defeat into a decisive victory, though the French lost 7000 in killed and wounded, the Austrians only 6400 (besides 3000 prisoners).
