Marietta, capital of Washington county, Ohio, on the Ohio River, 105 miles SE. of Columbus. Founded in 1788, it is the oldest town in the state, is the seat of Marietta College (1835), and has varied manufactures and a trade in the petroleum found near by. Remarkable traces of the earth-builders are visible here. Pop. (1890) 8308.
