Maris, JAKOB (1837–99), born at The Hague, studied in France, and was one of the greatest modern Dutch painters of landscape and genre. Only less famous is his brother Matthijs (born 1835, settled in London), a genre-painter; and a younger brother, Willem, a landscapist.
