Mascagni, PIETRO, composer, born 7th December 1863, at Leghorn, produced, after a somewhat irregular musical education, the brilliantly successful one-act opera Cavalleria Rusticana in 1890, in competition for a prize, the plot being taken from a story by Verga (q.v.). Later operas were L'Amico Fritz (1891, based on Erckmann-Chatrian), I Ranzau (1892), Nerone, besides songs and ballads.
