Melun, the capital of the French department of Seine-et-Marne, on the Seine, near the Forest of Fontainebleau, 28 miles S.E. of Paris. It has two interesting churches, and manufactures of leather, pottery, &c. Melun, the Melodunum of Cæsar, fell into the hands of the English after a six months' siege, in 1420, and was held by them for ten years. Pop. (1872) 11,098; (1891) 12,792.
