Mendès, CATULLE, born at Bordeaux of Jewish parentage 22d May 1841, has since 1859 written a long series of poems, romances, dramas, and libretti, as well as journalistic articles and criticisms on Wagner, &c. Of his novels may be named Le Roi Vierge (1880), Mephistophela (1890), and La Maison de la Vieille (1894).
