Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 7: Maltebrun to Pearson

Mesozoic (Gr., 'middle-life'), a term introduced by Professor Phillips to designate the group of geological systems, the fossil remains of which differ equally from those of the Palæozoic ('ancient-life') and Cainozoic ('never-life') eras. It is synonymous with the term Secondary, and includes the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous systems.
