Michel, FRANCISQUE, a learned French antiquary, was born at Lyons, 18th February 1809, became in 1839 professor in the Faculté des Lettres at Bordeaux, and died 19th May 1887. He earned a great reputation by his exhaustive researches in Norman history, French chansons, argot, the Basques, the history of mediaeval commerce, and many more among the byways of learning; and among individual books may here be named Histoire des Races maudites de la France et de l'Espagne (2 vols. 1847); Histoire des Hôtelleries, Cabarets, Hôtels garnis, &c. (2 vols. 1851-54); Œuvres choisies de Shakespeare (3 vols. 1868); Les Écossais en France et Les Français en Écosse (2 vols. 1862); and A Critical Inquiry into the Scottish Language, illustrating the Rise and Progress of Civilisation in Scotland (Edin. 1882).
