Mufti. The Turkish Grand Mufti or Sheikh-ul-Islam is the head of the great corporation of Ulema (q.v.), the interpreters of the Koran, by whose decisions (when written down, Fetwas) the Cadis have to judge. The chief of the Ulema is little less powerful than the Grand Vizier.
