Mullein

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 7: Maltebrun to Pearson, p. 341

Mullein, the common English name of the genus Verbascum, belonging to the Scrophulariaceæ, and containing some eighty species, of which some six (Great Mullein, White, Dark, Moth, &c.) are natives of England, and have been naturalised in the United States. The leaves and stem (2 to 4 feet high), of the common and larger species, are covered with a dense, woolly growth; the flowers form a dense spike a foot long. A mucilaginous decoction of the leaves is used to allay coughs and as an emollient application.
