Mullingar, the chief town of Westmeath, in Ireland, 50 miles WNW. of Dublin by rail, on the Royal Canal and the river Brosna. It is an important trading town, has large infantry barracks, and is a centre for anglers visiting the Westmeath lakes. Pop. (1861) 5426; (1891) 5323.
