Nabob

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 7: Maltebrun to Pearson

Nabob, an Anglo-Indian corruption of the word Nawāb ('deputy'), was the title belonging to the administrators of provinces under the Mogul empire. The title was continued under the British rule, but it gradually came to be applied generally to natives who were men of wealth and consideration. In Europe it is applied more or less sarcastically to those who, having made great fortunes in the Indies or in foreign parts generally, return to their native country, and live there in oriental splendour.
