Palo Alto, 33 miles SE. of San Francisco, the seat of a university founded at a cost of $15,000,000 by Senator Leland Stanford, and opened in 1891. It is designed to provide, entirely gratis, education from the Kindergarten stage to the most advanced instruction that human teachers can supply; and all the pupils are to board on the premises, at the smallest possible charge.
