Passeres (Lat. passer, 'sparrow'), the name given by Cuvier to the order of birds otherwise called Insectorres, comprising more than half of all the birds. As the order has no well-marked characters, sparrow-like or other, common to all its members, neither name is prominent in newer classifications. See BIRD, Vol. II. p. 173.
