Peary, ROBERT

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 7: Maltebrun to Pearson, p. 828

Peary, ROBERT, American naval captain, has undertaken five adventurous journeys along the Greenland coast (1886-99). He further proved Greenland an island, defined the outline of the N.E. corner, and brought back the enormous meteorite reported by Ross in 1818. See his Northward over the Great Ice (1898), and other books by Keely and Davis (1892), Heilprin (1893), Mrs Peary (who twice accompanied her husband), and Astrup (trans. 1898).
