Purple Emperor

Purple Emperor (Apatura iris), one of the largest of British butterflies, and one of the most richly coloured. The expanse of wings is from 2½ to 3¼ inches. The wings are strong and thick, and the flight is very vigorous. The male flies especially high, and will perch on lofty trees. The caterpillar is green and feeds on sallow.
