Remington, PHILO, inventor, was born at Litchfield in New York on 31st October 1816. He entered the small-arms factory of his father, and for twenty-five years superintended the mechanical department. The perfecting of the Remington breech-loading rifles and of the Remington typewriter was largely due to his inventive skill. He retired in 1886, and died on 4th April 1889.
