Röntgen, WILHELM KONRAD VON, physicist, born 27th March 1845 at Lennep in Rhenish Prussia, studied at Zurich, and became professor at Strasburg, Giessen, and (1885) at Würzburg. He has contributed to science on specific heat in gases, elasticity, compressibility, capillarity, the absorption of heat in steam and gases, and especially the X-rays, usually called after him.
