Savernake, a beautiful woodland region in Wiltshire, to the south of the town of Marlborough. Its 40,000 acres of farm and forest and hill, yielding only £12,000 net per annum, were sold in 1891 to Lord Iveagh for £750,000 by the Marquis of Ailesbury; but the sale, after prolonged litigation, was cancelled by the courts in 1893.
