Scharwenka, XAVER, pianoforte player and musical composer, was born at Saunten near Posen on 6th January 1850, and was trained as a musician at Posen and Berlin. On the conclusion of his studies he began to teach in Kullak's music academy in Berlin; but since 1873 he has devoted himself to composing and concerts. In 1881 he started a music school in Berlin. His compositions, embracing trios, quartetts, sonatas, concertos, 'studies,' and some famous Polish dance tunes, belong to the modern school.
