Sion

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 9: Bound to Swansea, p. 474

Sion, or SITTEN, capital of the Swiss canton of Valais, stands in a picturesque situation in the valley of the Rhone, 16 miles NE. of Martigny by the Simplon Railway. It has a mediæval appearance, owing to three ruined castles perched on the crags above the town, and its cathedral, which has been the church of a bishop since the 6th century. Pop. 5447.
