Stahl, GEORG ERNST, author of the Phlogiston (q.v.) theory in chemistry and of the theory of animism in medicine (see Vol. VII. p. 118), was born at Ansbach on 21st October 1660, and held successively the appointments of court-physician (from 1687) to the Duke of Saxe-Weimar, professor of Medicine (from 1694) in Halle, and body-physician (from 1714) to the king of Prussia. He died at Berlin on 14th May 1734. His chemical theory was expounded in Experimenta et Observationes Chemicæ (Berl. 1731), and his medical in Theoria Medica Vera (Halle, 1707).
