Adowa, a town of Abyssinia, the capital of Tigré, stands 6270 feet above sea-level, and 145 miles NE. of Gondar. Adowa is the chief entrepôt of trade between the interior of Tigré and the coast. It has a great weekly market and an extensive transit trade, in which gold, ivory, and slaves are articles of importance. Pop. 4000. Near the town the Italians met with a disastrous defeat in 1896.
