Agde, an ancient French town in the department of Hérault, situated about 3 miles from the Mediterranean Sea, on the left bank of a navigable stream, the mouth of which forms a harbour. It has a brisk coast-trade, while it is also the entrepôt for the traffic of the south and west of France. It stands on the lava from an extinct volcano, and is the ancient Agatha Narbonensis, originally a Greek colony. Pop. 6705.
