Algardi, ALESSANDRO, born at Bologna in 1602, ranks next to Bernini among Italian sculptors of the 17th century, and excelled especially in the representation of the nude. His works, however, suffered from a striving after picturesqueness, opposed to the simplicity of true sculpture. The most important is a colossal relievo, in St Peter's, of 'Pope Leo restraining Attila from marching on Rome.' Algardi died in 1654.
