Ar'endal

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 1: A to Beaufort

Ar'endal, a coast-town in the south-east of Norway, situated near the mouth of the Nidelf in the bay of Christiania. It is built partly on piles, partly on rock, and has been called 'Little Venice,' on account both of its picturesque appearance and of the canals which intersect it. The bay, which is protected by the island of Tromö, forms an excellent harbour, and favours the commerce of the town, which includes large exports of iron and timber. Pop. 4107.
