Atlantic City, a fashionable American health-resort, situated on a narrow, sandy island off the coast of New Jersey, 60 miles SE. of Philadelphia by rail. A good beach attracts a large number of summer visitors. Incorporated in 1854, the place has grown rapidly; its wide avenues are now lined with handsome cottages and villas, and lit with the electric light. Pop. (1870) 1043; (1890) 13,055.
