Volt (derived from Volta), the unit of electromotive force now in universal use among electricians. It is defined legally in terms of the ohm and ampere (see ELECTRICITY). An instrument for measuring voltage is called a voltmeter. The voltmeter is an instrument for measuring current, as explained at Electricity (q.v.).
