Beja (the Pax Julia of the Romans), a town in the province of Alentejo, Portugal, 101 miles SE. of Lisbon by rail. It has a castle and a cathedral, and manufactures of leather and earthenwares. Among its interesting Roman antiquities, the chief are the south gate and an aqueduct. Pop. 8487.
