Bejan, or BAJAN, the name of the first or 'freshman' class in the Scottish universities of St Andrews and Aberdeen, and of old in many continental universities. The word is believed to be derived from the French bec-jaune, 'yellow beak,' a term used to designate a nestling or unfledged bird. The levying of bejaunna, or payments for 'first-footing' by students on entering college, was forbidden by the statutes of the university of Orleans in 1365, and of the university of Toulouse in 1401. The election of an Abbas Bejanorum, or 'Abbot of the Greenhorns,' was prohibited by the statutes of the university of Paris in 1493. Beanus is another form.
