Bewcastle, a village of East Cumberland, 10 miles NE. of Brampton. Pop. of parish, 800. A headless stone cross in the churchyard, 14½ feet high, bears an Anglo-Saxon runic inscription, which, as interpreted by Professor Stephens of Copenhagen, shows the cross to belong to the year 670. See RUNES, and Trans. Cumberland Ant. Soc. (1878).
