Bewdley (formerly BEAULIEU, from its pleasant situation), a municipal borough on the right bank of the Severn, Worcestershire, 14 miles NNW. of Worcester, on the Severn Valley Railway. Till 1883 Bewdley returned one member to parliament. It has manufactures of leather, combs, malt, carpets, and iron and brass wares. Near the town is a public park of 400 acres. Bewdley in the 13th century had a right of sanctuary for those who had shed blood. Henry VII. built a palace at Bewdley for his son Arthur, married here by proxy to Catharine of Aragon. Pop. 2876.
