Bouvines, a village in the French department of Nord, 8 miles SE. of Lille, the scene of the victory of Philip Augustus of France over the Emperor Otto IV. in 1214—commemorated by a monument (1863)—and of a series of struggles in 1794 between the Austrians under Kinsky and the victorious French army of the north.
