Brentwood, a market-town in Essex, 10 miles SW. of Chelmsford by rail, stands on an eminence in a well-wooded country. It has a richly endowed grammar-school, founded by Sir Anthony Browne, Chief-justice of England, in 1567. There are remains of an old chapel, dedicated in 1221 to St Thomas à Becket. Pop. 4949.
