Brig, Brigantine. A brig is a square-rigged vessel with two masts. A brigantine, or herma-phrodite brig, is a two-masted vessel, with the mainmast of a schooner and the foremast of a brig.

A brig's mainsail is the lowest square-sail on the mainmast, whereas the mainsail of a brigantine is a fore-and-aft sail like that of a schooner.
