Burn, WILLIAM

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 2: Beaugency to Cataract, p. 567

Burn, WILLIAM, architect, born in Edinburgh, 20th December 1789, was trained under Smirke, founded a successful business in Edinburgh, and removed to London (1844), where he was equally popular and well employed, and where he died 15th February 1870. Specimens of his work are scattered over the whole kingdom. His 'restoration' of St Giles' Church (1829-33) in Edinburgh was singularly devoid of taste or reverence, and has been as far as possible undone.
