Cajabamba, capital of the province of Chimborazo, in Ecuador, 102 miles S. of Quito, on the arid plateau of Topi, at an elevation of 9480 feet. Pop. 16,000. The former town of Riobamba, founded on this site in 1533, was in 1797 overwhelmed by an earthquake in which 30,000 lives were lost.
