Canosa, a town of Southern Italy, in the province of Bari, 13 miles SW. of Barletta. It is situated on the declivity of a steep hill, whose summit is crowned by a ruined castle. It has a cathedral (1101-1825), with the tomb of Bohemond I.; but it is chiefly remarkable as occupying the site of ancient Canusium, one of the chief cities of Apulia. Sepulchres have been found here containing painted vases and funereal furniture of the most magnificent description, painted busts, marble statues, &c.; and countless antiquities have been transferred hence to the museum at Naples. There are also ruins of an amphitheatre, gateway, aqueduct, &c. Canosa suffered by earthquake in 1851. Pop. 18,422. See CANNÆ.
