Carson, CHRISTOPHER, commonly known as KIT CARSON, born in Kentucky, 24th December 1809, emigrated to Missouri, where for many years he led the life of a trapper and hunter. His intimate acquaintance with Indian habits and languages secured his selection as a guide in Fremont's explorations, and as Indian agent in New Mexico, to which post he was appointed in 1853. For services in this quarter during the civil war, he was breveted brigadier-general. He died at Fort Lynn, Colorado, 23d May 1868. See his Life by Charles Burdett (Phila. 1869).
