Chord, in Music, is the simultaneous and harmonious union of sounds of different pitch. The common chord is a note with its third and fifth reckoned upwards, thus: Musical notation showing a treble clef with a staff. The first three lines are empty. The fourth line has a single note (F), the fifth line has a single note (A), and the sixth line has a single note (C). Below the staff, the letters 's', 'm', and 'd' are written vertically, corresponding to the notes on the staff.; or in the tonic sol-fa notation, s m d: this is the basis of all Harmony (q.v.).
